What is Tajweed and Why is it Important?

The Qur’an is the word of Allah ﷻ, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as guidance for all of humanity. Because of its sacred status, Muslims are encouraged not just to read the Qur’an, but to recite it correctly and beautifully. This is where Tajweed comes in.

What is Tajweed?

The word Tajweed comes from the Arabic root jawwada, which means to make better or to improve. In the context of the Qur’an, Tajweed refers to the set of rules that ensure each letter is pronounced correctly, with its proper characteristics, while maintaining the beauty and rhythm of the Qur’an’s recitation.

For example, Tajweed teaches us how to:

Pronounce letters from their correct points of articulation (makharij).

Apply rules like Ikhfa, Idgham, Iqlab, and Ghunna.

Preserve the length of vowels (madd).

Avoid common mistakes that can change meanings.

Why is Tajweed Important?

  1. Preserving the Qur’an

From the time of the Prophet ﷺ until today, Tajweed has helped Muslims preserve the correct recitation of the Qur’an. Without Tajweed, words may be mispronounced, which could change meanings.

  1. Fulfilling an Obligation

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an:
“…And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.” (Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4)
This verse is a clear reminder that we are commanded to recite carefully, not hastily, and Tajweed provides the method to do so.

  1. Beautifying the Recitation

A recitation with Tajweed is not only correct but also beautiful to listen to. It touches hearts and brings khushū‘ (humility) in salah and personal recitation.

  1. Reward from Allah ﷻ

Every letter recited from the Qur’an carries a reward. When recited properly, with Tajweed, it shows respect for the Book of Allah and increases our reward.
